The Robotics Revolution: The Next Great Leap in Manufacturing

BCG The Robotics Revolution The Next Great Leap in Manufacturing Exhibit 5x Poland

It has been roughly four decades since industrial robots—with mechanical arms that can be programmed to weld, paint, and pick up and place objects with monotonous regularity—first began to transform assembly lines in Europe, Japan, and the U.S. Yet walk the floor of any manufacturer, from metal shops to electronics factories, and you might be surprised by how many tasks are still performed by human hands—even some that could be done by machines. The reasons are simple: economics and capabilities. It is still less expensive to use manual labor than it is to own, operate, and maintain a robotics system, given the tasks that robots can perform. African Youth and the Persistence of Marginalization: Employment, politics, and prospects for change

book AFRICAN YOUTH 9781138829473

The much heralded growth and transformation of many economies in sub-Saharan Africa over the last decade continues to receive prominent attention in academic scholarship and among policy practitioners. UNCTAD Trade and Development Report 2015

Trade and Development Report 2015 cover

Gordon Brown, chief conductor of the G20 choir at the time, placed the blame firmly on inadequately regulated financial institutions that had become less “stewards of people’s money” and more “speculators with people’s futures”; what was needed, he insisted, was new global rules underpinned by shared global values. Shortly after, the leaders of the BRIC countries, at their first summit in the Russian Federation, called for more democratic international financial institutions, along with a stable, predictable and more diversified international monetary system. How Retailers Can Improve Promotion Effectiveness

BCG 2015-10-22 How Retailers Can Improve Promotion Effectiveness Exhibit 3 .doc

Brick-and-mortar retailers—including supermarkets, discounters, drugstores, and mass merchandisers—rely heavily on promotions, which typically account for 10 to 45 percent of their total revenues. Although promotions are a powerful instrument for increasing sales and margin, they are also difficult to use effectively. One reason for this is a lack of clear insight into which promotions are working—and why. The Boston Consulting Group’s research indicates that 20 to 50 percent of promotions generate no noticeable lift in sales—or, worse, have a negative impact. Another 20 to 30 percent dilute margins in that they don’t generate an increase in sales sufficient to offset promotion costs. Read the rest of this entry »
