The quantum revolution in the maritime logistics

By Marek Grzybowski

Maritime transport has recently experienced great turmoil. The new mutations of the coronavirus pandemic and the sanctions imposed on Russia after that country invaded Ukraine have caused disruptions in global logistics. Congestion at the last mile in a port, logistics center or container terminal causes global turmoil in leading industrial markets, both on the supply and demand side.

The world’s merchant ship fleet reached a capacity of around 2.3 billion dwt in January 2023. This is about 60 million dwt more than a year earlier and over 120 million dwt than in January 2021. Tonnage has increased significantly in all segments except general cargo operators in the last two years.

Bulk carriers recorded a particularly rapid increase in overall carrying capacity. The share of bulk carriers in the total capacity increased from 41 to 43 percent, the share of tankers decreased from 30 to 29 percent, and the share of general cargo ships from 5 to 4 percent. in the years 2012-2022.

Over 500 LNG tankers transported liquefied gas across the oceans in 2021. About 650 LNG tankers transported LNG on sea routes in 2022. By the end of 2023, their number will increase to about 690 LNG tankers.

Quantum technology for the logistics industry

What can a forward-thinking organization do with the current state of technology? – asks Dr. Christopher Savoie, CEO of Zapata Computing in Forbs and answers: “It’s best to start with making the most of this technology.”

“We’re seeing a steady evolution of quantum hardware, which is becoming increasingly fault-tolerant, and existing technology is slowly becoming more widely available,” said CEO Zapata Computing.

“Quantum technology is an exciting development for the logistics industry as it allows us to solve the recurring problem of finding the most efficient route between multiple hubs, which is becoming increasingly difficult in a complex environment,” said Justin Baird, Head of Innovation, DHL, Asia-Pacific Center. Logistics in storms need support

Turmoil in sea and land logistics networks will require the support of efficient tools. These include the already widespread use of IoT and the management of ship and car fleets, traffic control in ports, on railroads and on rivers.
The smallest yacht or even a boat moving on inland waterways is supported by satellite technologies.

No one can imagine the movement of ships, cars and even couriers without the support of satellite technologies. Tracking a package purchased in a store by an individual customer is already a standard. It can therefore be expected that according to the predictions of IBM and DHL and the services introduced by UPS, quantum algorithms will enter global and local logistics at a rapid pace.

If large and small ports, terminals and logistics centers, sea and land connections are to participate in the logistics networks of the global economy, then we must be prepared to introduce innovative solutions based on quantum, information and space technologies today. Otherwise, we risk marginalization or even falling out of the market.

Sea transport in economic storms. UNCTAD 2022 Report

Higher grain prices and dry bulk freight rates in early 2022 will contribute to a 1.2 percent increase in consumer food prices. Container ships berthed 13.7% longer in 2021 compared to 2020, exacerbating delays and shortages of goods. Over the past year, the total greenhouse gas emissions from the global fleet have increased by 4.7% – these are the findings of UNCTAD exports included in the latest report “Maritime Transport Review 2022”.

“In short, we need to tackle the many sources of inefficiencies at ports and in land transport networks. This review also calls for better implementation of transport and trade facilitation solutions at ports and borders. At UNCTAD, we work very closely on facilitation through different programs on ports and customs like ASYCUDA and the ports management program. These are our largest technical assistance projects going to really dozens of countries around the world. This report also calls for a faster transition to smart and green logistics systems and to the widespread use of electronic documents in international trade. All of these are solutions to reduce logistic costs, which in turn translate into lower prices for the world” – said Rebeca Grynspan, Secretary-General of UNCTAD in the Statement during the Presentation of the “Review of Maritime Transport 2022” in Geneva.

Pacific shipping aground. US orders in China fell by 40%

Cancellations of ocean services in the Pacific, changes in schedules in ocean services, consolidation of cargo by ocean operators are visible in December. And stormy times await US importers in January 2023. It is already known that US orders in China fell by 40%. Chinese factories are closing two weeks earlier than usual for the Chinese New Year. An increase in the supply of bulk goods, LNG, general cargo and in containers is recorded in Polish ports.

Collapse of demand for sea transport between the USA and China as a result of the economic slowdown in the United States and the policy of deglobalization and relocation of production to North America. It’s a “very bad time for the shipping industry,” said one manager at an Asian logistics company.

U.S. logistics managers are bracing for delays in shipments from China in early January due to canceled container ship sailings and export rollovers by ocean carriers, CNBC has warned, citing information from U.S. logistics operators.

Poland

Polish exports grew dynamically in the 8 months of this year. In the period from January to August this year, In 2018, Polish exports amounted to EUR 221.2 billion, the Central Statistical Office (GUS) reported. This is an increase of 19.9% respectively. in export.

The turnover with countries outside the EU is decisive for the maritime turnover of our ports. Poland’s export value was EUR 25.7 billion, which was 22.8% higher than in the previous year.

During the first 8 months of this year, we exported to Great Britain for EUR 11.0 billion (increase by 20.5%), and to the USA for EUR 6.6 billion (increase by 36.3%). The activity of our terminals in large ports is also influenced by imports from highly developed countries outside the EU. It reached EUR 23.2 billion, an increase of 49.7%.

Imports from the USA (EUR 9.5 billion, increase by 79.2%) and South Korea (EUR 5.2 billion, increase by 23.2%) were decisive here.

Imports from China were significant (EUR 34.2 billion, an increase of 33.6%).

Therefore, the Polish economy reacts to global market changes less dramatically than the US, which has a positive impact on the turnover in Polish ports of fundamental importance for the economy. This means that the ports will have good results not only in terms of transshipments, but also in revenues from the sale of services. Already in January we will find out how much better these results will be than last year.

EU maritime clusters. A course on integration, internationalization and ecology

Recently, a meeting of the European Network of Maritime Clusters (ENMC) was held – an association of maritime clusters operating in the European Union. The agenda of the meeting also included talks with representatives of the European Commission dealing with renewable energy (DG ENERGY) and protection of the marine environment (DG MARE).

The meeting of representatives of clusters operating in European Union countries took place on November 18, 2022. The meeting was hosted by Fabrice Maire, President, ENMC, President of Luxembourg Maritime Cluster. Marjolein van Noort assisted the president in organizational matters. Poland was represented by Marek Grzybowski, president of the board of the Baltic Maritime Cluster.

Since its establishment in 2005, the main mission of ENMC has been to jointly create maritime cooperation between European maritime industries, science and social and political institutions. The activities of European maritime clusters are focused on creating a maritime policy that is friendly to business and society by influencing European political decision-makers.

Members of the European Network of Maritime Clusters met at the headquarters of DG MARE. The meeting was attended by: Lorella de la Cruz, Deputy Head of Unit, MARE A2 (Blue Economy Sectors, Aquaculture and Maritime Spatial Planning), Pauline Caumont, Policy Assistant, MARE A2, Manuel Pleguezuelo Alonso, Policy Officer, MARE A3 (sea basin strategies, maritime regional cooperation and maritime security), dr. Marcin Sadowski, Policy Specialist, MARE A1 (marine innovations, marine knowledge and investments).

The ENMC meeting with Ricardo Renedo Williams, Policy Officer, Infrastructure and Regional Cooperation was held at the headquarters of DG ENERGY of the European Commission.

– The European Green Deal has placed renewable energy at the heart of the clean energy transition. Current international tensions following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the general geopolitical context and very high energy prices have exacerbated the need to accelerate energy efficiency and the spread of renewable energy in the Union in order to gradually eliminate the EU’s dependence on Russian fossil fuels, said Ricardo Renedo Williams, who informed about the new Commission document of the European Union, which establishes programs to accelerate the implementation of renewable energy.

The ENMC maritime cluster meeting was held in a hybrid form and at the headquarters of the Dutch Maritime Cluster. In the near future, it was decided to focus on the development of an environmentally friendly maritime economy and the implementation of Fit for 55, the development of zero-emission shipping and the use of information and space technologies in maritime industries. These activities are to be supported by further integration of clusters operating in the European Union.
