HR.COM editorial team interviewed Brendan Noonan from Emirates Airline, at the Leadership Excellence Awards this past March. Here are some excerpts from the exclusive interview.
What is the overall objective of The Emirates Group Management Certificate and Diploma Programme curriculum?
The programme comprises a competency-development curriculum for managers to help them demonstrate what good leadership looks like — in providing direction, engaging others and being a role model. Specifically, the curriculum builds on how they can:
• Effectively lead and engage their talent
• Drive commercial and operational performance
• Sustain organizational success through effective business decisions
The program’s focus is to guide leaders on how to tap people’s best contributions toward the organization’s highest priorities; to assist them in identifying their role in fostering effective corporate transformation, and in the process to function as effective change agent.

What are the lessons you’ve learned this year from facilitating your program?
To provide a more robust structure that will ensure effectiveness of immediate application of learnings at the workplace. Although the programme is designed for learners to take full responsibility in their development, we have to ensure line managers’ support. We are embedding workplace application point system and meaningful coaching conversations using a social learning platform.
How do you measure the return on investment and success of the program?
We have incorporated both summative and formative assessments in all our courses. Various training methodologies are used in the classroom for us to devise different types of evaluation, depending on the course objectives and aims. We also administer surveys to both learners and their line managers to evaluate the success of the programme implementation looking at its contribution to business or departmental results and people engagement/ performance.
